'The foreign letters say': Newsletters and Newspapers in the Long Eighteenth Century

Friday, May 1, 2015
10:00 AM - 11:30 AM
Location: Dabney Hall 110 (Treasure Room)
Rachael King, Assistant Professor of English, University of California, Santa Barbara

Rachael King will examine the genre of the manuscript newsletter, a key venue for news circulation through the mid-eighteenth century. Focusing on hybrid manuscript-print news documents, she will argue that the emergence of the news media was not primarily a print phenomenon for at least the first century of the periodical press, and and that handwritten letters provided the basis for seventeenth- and eighteenth-century newsgathering.
